I've just come back, less than a week ago after spending 4 days in New York! I also went about 16 months ago. My itinerary was something like:
Day 1 (the day I arrived)- Macys and Times Square
Day 2 Staten Island Ferry, (this time I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge) Wall Street, Ground Zero, helicopter flight, Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Chinatown
Day 3 - Empire State, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central Station (one of my favourite buildings!), the lobby of the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Centre (including Top of the Rock)
Day 4 - Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (this time I went to the Museum of Natural History)
Day 5 - Sunday brunch at The View - a revolving restaurant in Times Square then last minute shopping in Times Square before going to the airport.

I would highly recommend the guide book 'A Brits Guide to New York' - tells you practically everything you should need to know.

Have a wonderful time - though I'm confident that you will!
spudqueen your amazing, well done to have visited so many places, what did you do in the evenings ?
Flavels if you dont want such a hectic schedule, may I suggest that day 1 you take the hop on hop off bus and do the whole tour, then mark off all the places that interest you and visit in your own time and if you get sidetracked on the way ,well your on holiday, do your own thing.
Times Square booth sells half price theatre tickets from around 4pm- be prepared to queue- but its worth it.
Do some shopping, its much cheaper than UK and the shop assistants are actually helpful.
Most of all enjoy the big apple.
Hi Dee Sa, it was a hectic time, but absolutely brilliant. Was shattered when I got back, but when you've got so little time in a place like New York you've got to make the most of it! Evenings were spent going for a meal (one night we went to the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square) then going to bed! The first time I went I did go to the theatre, but the friends I was with this time weren't that bothered.
Take a quick few minutes to visit the top of the Radio City Tower. From there, you can view the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the Statue of Liberty, and get them all in one photo.
heathfield - would that be Top of the Rock - the top of the Rockefeller Centre?
The boat trip around Manhattan Island is good too - great views of the city & the Statue of Liberty.
