What is the best, free, file compression programme???
WinRar, Winzip or other............???
Are zipped or compressed file types hidden??
ie...... could i zip a file up and send it (email etc) without anyone being able to see what the compressed file is before its un-zipped/compressed.

Well WinRar and Winzip aren't free, they're on a trial period and after 40 or so days you have to register.

Once the files are compressed, they will be "hidden" as such until they are downloaded. For example you can download a .zip file and simply hover over it, for the contents to be listed. As for .rar files, this doesn't happen but if you right-click, it will show the amount of files in the compressed folder.
Winrar will let you password protect your archives and encrypt the filenames so you can't even get a list of the contents without the password.
7zip is a good free unzipping program (it handles pretty much all compression formats too):
