after saying goodbye to him and stroking him as he was put to sleep.

He was suffering with the usual old aged cat thing ~ kidney cancer. Sonny was with us for just a year. He wandered in a couple of weeks after our other cat had died, and he certainly lessened the pain of our loss. A big character, chatty & loving.

Part of me is so glad to have given him a comfortable last year of his life, but I shall miss him so very much. I am crying like a baby...any comforting words?

Just think of "Rainbow Bridge" Pippa. Im so sorry.
awww, so sad for you Pippa, i lost my litle cat to kidney cancer at the age of just 5. It broke my heart! Its a difficult thing to do but its for the best. Thinking of you x x x x
I lost my cat Squeak - he couldnt mieow hence the name.
He to had cancer and had to be put to sleep at 8 years old.
He was a rescue cat that we had for just 3 years, he was just starting to trust again.
When we got him he was thin with not much hair and scared of everything, he was really badly treated by the people that used to have him.
We gave him 3 very happy years and he gave us the same.
It is hard - but it will get easyer.
You gave Sonny the best thing you can ---- peace.
You have done the right thing to stop any suffering.
He will always be in your heart -- and you in his.
Getting another cat to give all your love to can really help.
Its not replacing Sonny and he will know this - hes probally looking down on you right now wishing you wernt so sad because now hes in heaven and is well again playing with all the other cats and telling them what a kind loving mummy you are and how happy you made him.

My thoughts are with you. Yelofox XxX
I'm so sorry for you. Weep Not For Me by Constance Jenkins helped me.

Weep not for me though I am gone
into that gentle night.
Grieve if you will, but not for long
upon my soul's sweet flight.

I am at peace, my soul's at rest
there is no need for tears.
For with your love I was so blessed
for all those many years.

There is no pain, I suffer not
the fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts
in your memory I live on.

Remember not my fight for breath
remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death,
but celebrate my life.

Take care, Pud xx

Thanks so much to everyone ~ although all the answers made me weep even more, I have taken comfort from all the posts :o)

Octavius ~ thank you for the lovely poem which I have printed off..it says everything. Thanks also to Wardy. Lovely to see you, you treasure..your prose is delightful.

I have just come back from collecting Sonny from the vets. We weren't sure whether to cremate him or bury him, and in the end we have decided to bury him with the other moggies.

Thanks again to all. It was lovely to see so many kind & well thought out posts.

But still I give thanks to you for posting it, Octavius. It is still comforting me..and I am hoping another stray comes to my door.

Thanks bigmamma. Just when I think everything is ok I start weeping again. Tonight I was cutting up pieces of chicken and was half expecting a paw to reach up onto the work top. Things like that get to you, I guess :o(
