My last two moves went swimmingly.........until the solicitors got involved, and then it was a case of having to constantly chase them to cajole them into writing and/or responding to letters (in one particular case they sent me a copy of a letter they had received three weeks previously!).

My question is - can the buyers and sellers use the same firm of solicitors? I appreciate you probably can't use the same individual, but what about the same firm?

It just strikes me that this would be a much quicker process - plus, of course, we'd be able to negotiate a discount.

The owners of the house I bought last year used the same firm of solicitors as me, just different actual solicitors and nothing was mentioned that this could be a problem.

First you criticise solicitors, then you ask a legal question.

You can always do your own 'conveyancing' if you so wish.

BTW why would you expect a discount on two totally independent instructions?.

Never bought or sold a house without all that madness going on, seems to be par for the course but they always seem to get there in the end.

Just reporting the facts - when you employ a professional you expect a fast and efficient service: I received neither.

No, I wouldn't expect a discount from two independent instructions, but by pooling our custom I would expect a certain amount of economies of scale to take effect.

Oh and trust me, it felt like a had to do my own conveyancing, so much so that I found out there was a possible Chancel liability on my current house - not my solicitor: professional negligence.
