Is it ok to feed birds crumbs. bacon rind etc, they are lovely but do not wish harm them in any way,

Yes, it's fine warpig, but do make sure that the rind especially is chopped up very small, as in the next month or so the first youngsters will be out the nest and feeding themselves.
