I've asked my dad for money to pay off my loan accrued over the period while I was a student - not student loan, it was to cover my graduate studies which I didn't end up completing anyway due to not being able to afford the studies. My sister has now gone really angry on me and said that if my dad gives me any money toward paying off the debt, she wants half as she also has debts to pay. When I asked her why she didn't just ask him for some money too she said she was too proud to ask and was just glad that I'd asked. If he gives me anything I'll be madly made up as I need to stop paying stuff off so I can save up a deposit for a house as I have a little girl now. Should I give her half of what if anything he says he can afford to give me?

I didn't realise that this would be such a contentious subject. When my mum and dad divorced (I was 7 then), part of the settlement was that my dad would pay my and my sister's educational fees up to and including university / postgrad. Although we both studied to that level, we both paid our own fees and living expenses like everyone else - part time work and loans. We didn't realise the divorce agreement had that clause in it. I don't know why my mum never forced the issue as apart from anything else my dad is actually very rich although I know that makes me sound spoilt, even though we were never a part of all of that.

It was only because another member of our family was suprised at us getting into debt to go to uni that I decided to ask him for money in the first place.

I know loads of people have to pay their own way, and we have never asked for any cash and have always worked, paying off any debts using our own money but I thought I'd ask anyway. I'm not saying I deserve the money or anything, but I cought on to the slim chance of help in that he had agreed to pay any fees (albeit years ago) and then didn't. I didn't want to sound spoiled but I didn't see the harm in asking him.

Once I plucked up the courage, I didn't expect my sister then to go berserk and demand half the money that I hadn't even been told I was being given, or to be told that I was spoiled etc by people on this board!

Don't know if that changes anything, but I wish I'd rephrased my original question to maybe give some background if it helped at all.

I told my dad about my sister's request and he told me to tell her to ask him herself, which didn't really help as he hasn't answered me yet lol.....but sounds more promising.

Good luck NiceCupOfTea and let us know of the progress, I think now everybody who criticised you so much will notice they just judged you for the first image they had, and they were wrong. I feel relieved I didn't go for that and you justified my beliefs that you are just somebody wanting to go up the ladder, and not an acommodated person who lives always the same life and is too proud to ask for help when they need.
Happy easter holidays for you!
