does anyone know what zone ticket i would need to get the train from liverpool - chester.

As Dzug states, the single fare is �4.30. A return fare is normally �5.75 but a Cheap Day Return will cost you only 5p more than a single ticket. (i.e. �4.35).
In Chester, just show your rail ticket on the bus to or from the city centre, and you'll get free travel.

For Baby02 (additional to Spudqueen's post):
Outside of the London commuter area, Cheap Day Returns generally only have the morning restriction and not the 'evening peak' one.
Additionally, of course, a Cheap Day Return is only valid for one day. With an Open Return ticket, you can return within 3 calendar months.
