Tourettes Syndrome

Can I first explain that I do not mean any offence to anyone who suffers with this affliction.

Cough, cough right, here we go, I have often wondered why people just shout obsceneties and swear words - why do they never seem to shout nice things or nice words - can someone explain this so I am not ignorant of this ?

i dont know for sure but is it something to with the fact they know all the things that would be inappropriate to say, ie swear words, or 'fat' at someone who is overweight or nig*er to a black person, so because of the or condition they end up saying it? there was a tv progamme on about it not so long ago and think this is what someone who had it said..

Only a very small percentage of people who have Tourettes actually swear out loud.

It's more to do about things being taboo topics. A few months back I watched a programme about it on Channel 4 (I don't remember what it was called, sorry) and one of the guys featured said that it was things that shouldn't be said and they literally can't keep it in.

They were on a tour with children who had Tourettes and when they were at tourist attractions they were calling out things like, "I've got a bomb!". It's distressing for them, too. They don't want to do it.

The guy also said that he can't buy his Christmas presents until the very last minute as he'll shout out what he has bought for that person, so it's not just obscenities.

I think Big Brother winner Pete has made people more aware of it now and it`s not such a big deal when you hear someone in Tescos shouting "Arse" every two minutes

I watched Tourette De France. It was brilliant. One of the residents at work has Tourette's and takes great delight in calling people all the names under the sun!lol.x

I may be wrong again, I often am, but I only left school 18 years ago. All these syndromes you hear about today simply didn't exist when I was at school, yet were "discovered" many years ago.

Tourettes, Autism, Aspbergers (Sp), ADHD, Cognitive Behavioural Deficit, blah blah blah.

The only thing that made kids odd was the revelation that certain "E" numbers, especially in KiaOra and what not.

I recall the movie Rainman was in fact the platform for such symptoms to come to light.

I doubt the whole psychiatric world and need for parents to label their wayward kids with something scientific. Some kids are just bad, some good, some mad and some just sad.

That is how it was not that long ago.

joe I know what your saying by if my sons autism is in our heads how is it he cannot speak at the age of 7, I think there is a lot of shoddy parenting going on and it is all to easy to blame add, adhd,add-nos ect

some children do have brain conditions, my sons are not badly behaved nor do they feast on e numbers!, you only have to look at the parents if you want to tell the difference between a genuine disorder and neglectful parenting.

Well those syndromes did exist joe, I just think that society � outside of medical research and knowledge - was less aware of the prevalence until a shift in the collective thirst for knowledge, acceptance and understanding made public many such genetic disorders.

I agree with what you are saying in essence, many parents are unwilling to accept that their child may just be different and feel that this must be as a result of a disorder or syndrome. One of the most widely over-used terms is dyslexia, which in many cases is just children who are plain crap at spelling or reading. Admittedly some are truly dyslexic, but it seems many mummies and daddies in the common �accepting� society today would prefer to say that their child has a known disorder rather than being lacking in any educational talent.

my son has adhd . it has always been around but called a different name back in the 1930 say any child would of been in a mental home . over the year the illness has been given a name .it not just a child thinking oh lets be naughty they really cant help it ,its a in balance in the brain . i use to think ADHD was just made up for a naughty child how wrong was i , i have talked to so many doctors and stuff i understand it so much now . any one with any off the illness joe has said its hard work i can tell you .

I agree with you sleepyj, these conditions are much more drastic than general naughtiness, it is extremely hard work to deal day in day out with a child who has a specific condition. my brother had severe adhd as a child and was treated very badly at school (in the 80s) mainly due to the lack of knowledge, he was not like a naughty kid who was just left to run riot, he literally could not sit still and would only sleep for an hour a night, it was very hard to live in that environment and my parents did the best they could.

whilst its common to generalise, you have to walk a mile in someones shoes before you can comment on special needs in general.

i have on son that dont have adhd he has been no problem at all the my other child that adhd has been hard work both been treated the same same home life everything . the tablet he takes it says if you dont have adhd it like taking speed . he needs hes tablet or he is up the wall if he dont have it . what does speed do to you any way ?

Speed...speeds you up big time and keeps you awake. Never tried it myself but been out in the company of people that have taken it.
