Lump on nose piercing
19 Answers
I had my nostril pierced approx 5 weeks ago; I have a "U" shaped gem stone stud. It was fine for the first 3 weeks but then I had a small lump appear. Unfortunately I was silly and I picked at the lump making it quite sore, I then made it worse by "over-cleaning" and moving the stud around too much. I toned down my cleaning regime and the lump has improved I have used warm water with sea salt and also Savlon's Woundwash. However, I still have the lump and I am still concerned about it. The lump is about the same size as the gem stone on my stud now; it is hard and slightly redder than my normal skin tone. It is not painful but it sometimes has a bit of crusting onto of it. After reading lots of info on line I am confused as to exactly what it is and what the best treatment is to get rid of it. I hope that someone can answer my questions below!!!
What is it? (Abscess, Granuloma, Keloid, Hypertrophic scarring???)
How do I treat it? (Saltwash, Woundwash, Tea tree, Hydrocortisone, Powdered asprin???)
How long should treatment take to work???

I would however do as 4getmenot suggests and remove it.
If you're really against that idea then return to where you had it pierced and ask for advice. I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing...wait until it heals and get it repierced.
And don't pick at it next time!!!

Hi Everyone! Yes I did ask about this before but I have had a lot of conficting advice from various places and so I wanted to give abit more detail etc. I really don't want to take the stud out as I really like it. I am hoping that this is a common problem with nose piercings and If i perservere and be patient it will be OK!!!???
No, it;s not a common problem with nose peircings, or any other kind of piercing. Peircings should generally be quite painless in the aftermath and no peircing should produce any kind of lump. I agree that you should go back to the place you had it peirced and ask their advice, infact, perhaps you should go to a couple of different piercers. If I were you though I'd cut my losses and remove it. It's obviosuly either infected and scarring and it won't improve until you remove it. The others are right, just get it done again once it has healed.
Kaz, 25 yrs experience (you didnt get it done in Bath place did you)... Seriously I told you before a lump by year piercing need a few days treating with hydrogen peroxide. Apply it with an ear bud, if this doesnt work, go for hot compresses for a few days, if this still doesnt work and you still have a granuloma. Take the stud out for a few days till the lump goes down, should be a few days, anything up to 5 then reinsert. If it flares up again take the stud out all together, then have it repierced a few weeks later.
Im pretty experienced when it comes to piercings. I have had many over the years and my nose piercing is 17 years old now. Stop touching it, rotate it when you wash your face twice a day, the wound should be wet when you do it.

As for you sleepyj, I think you probably werent meant to have your nose pierced. I can leave my stud out for months at a time and reinsert easily, like ears the holes should stay open and not close over. If it smells thats pretty rank.
You must remember that your piercing is a foreign object and by knocking, touching it, changing studs etc you are reminding your body it is there, so the rejection process will start up. I am currently nursing a lip piercing which has been one of the trickiest to look after.

Thank you Goodsoulette, Finally some experienced, well informed advice!!. Other sites have recommended the hydrogen peroxide method but I was a bit scared so I hadn't tried this yet? were your "lumps" the same as mine as I know there are various types? At the moment i am just soaking my nose in a cup of warm water once a day I was advised by my piercer if I left it alone abit it might sort itself out? Thanks again for your advice (to me and the others!!!)
