I've recently been diagnosed as diabetic. As I'm only in the lower range of the disease, and it's quite normal for older people (I'm 66) to become dibetic, I don't have any special food. Having said that, I've never eaten convenience foods and would advise you to avoid them, too.
There should be plenty of information on the Internet.
Please ask your doctor for proper advice - he may refer you to a nutritionist or dietician to help you eat the right food for you.

Here is an excellent site for people with diabetes - with advice about shopping, menu planning and lifestyle, and a forum too.

Im not ill, its actually my mum that has diabetes but thanks for your help. She appreciates it x
My Dad is type 2, and my Mum buys him food that is ALWAYS less than 5% "of which sugars" on the label, under the carbohydrate listing. She looks at this when buying things like cereal/scones, but basically he doesn't eat food with sugar/glucose/sucrose etc
I am type 1 diabetic, and can eat anything. So long as I keep to a healthy balanced diet - I can have snacks and sweets in moderation. I have found that sticking to high GI foods stops me from having too many highs or lows
Avoid carbohydrates and the hidden sugars in such things as Crisps, pastries, cereal.

Porridge is very good too.

As long as you have a healthy balance - you shouldn't really be buying special foods. Especially avoid the diabetic range at Boots - full of Fat & Sweetners that are harmful to the digestive system. Avoid particularly sugary foods and also try to avoid too much pasta/potatos.
I'm a diabetic & have been for 25 years.

Who said avoid carbohydrates? Being as our diet is or should be 'Sugar Free' carbohydrates are our energy source.
Cereals are OK (the right ones) , Shredded Wheat = OK Puffed Wheat = OK, Ready-Brek = OK,

The Diabetic Nurse at you Docs Surgery should be helping her. They are there for you.
