Tracing someone

Hi everyone, not sure if I have posted this question in the right section!

Anyway, I would like to trace my birth father, who I never met. All I know is his name, could anyone advise of what is the best thing to do, is there somewhere that will trace him and then let him know that I want to see him for me??

have you tried looking under friends re-united? It's a bit difficult if you only know a name, unless it's unusual? or there is the census online but again you'd really need to know a date or place of birth.

yeah I have tried looking in friends re-united, I didnt find anything. I havent tried the census online, as all I have is a name and a rough round about age!!!!

Try the voters register, is he named on your birth certificate?

Might give you an age etc

I've traced many many people with little information with amazing success (part of my job). Obviously makes it easier if he has an unusual name.

Do you know what town/city he was from?

Might mean you have to make a few calls to random people in the phonebook, from experience I've found most are very willing to help.

If you think you know where he is from you could put a small ad in the local paper asking if anyone knows of him could they ask him to call.

Thanks very much Mr Sensible for that advice, I know where he used to live, not too sure he will still live there. I will try the voters register and see what that brings me!! just turned 25 last week and just feel like this is something i really want to do. Its never crossed my mind before, but for some reason i really wanna meet him now!!! fingers crossed then!!!

The census won't help you as details are only released after 100 years ie the latest census to go on line was the 1901 one. Do you not know of any of his family or friends?

No i dont know anything at all about him!! Just his name and an age. I cant find nothing nowhere, I really dont wanna bring this subject up with my mam either. x
