military records
Are there any military records that I can look at online? My great grandfather William Johnson was a private in the York 2nd West Militia when he got married in 1856. His address is given as Swinegate York . Any help would be much appreciated

Some are available to view online at a cost of 3.50, others require a trip to the archives in Kew.

Sorry for being so tardy in my replies. Thanks for all your help I've had a look at Regiments.org but they don't have individual records and there doesn't seem to be a regimental museum. Have tried the Nat Archives but they only seem to have WW1and2 and specific campaign records online so I think it will be a trip to Kew. Thanks fatrascal didn't know about the Borthwick institue, they seem to have records from the chocolate factories too and family legend has it that side of the family came down from Scotland to work in them. So will have to make a trip oop north as well!
