I can't get an @ sign from the @ button

i can't get an @ symbol from the @ button and have to use the " button instead. I also can't get a pound sign symbol without inserting it from symbols.

Your keyboard is set to US.

Try pressing left Alt key and left shift key together.

If that doesn't work:

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and Regional and Language options.

Then click the Languages tab.

Then the Details button.

Then Settings tab.

You should be able to set UK English there

Assuming you are using Windows XP

On a keyboard configured to US standards the @ will be " and vice versa as you probably know.
The advice Ethel has offered is spot on.
