Snails in aquarium

I am plagued with small snails in my aquarium (43 Lt capacity) There is a compartment at the rear of the tank where the filters, pump and heater are contained, and that is where majority of the snails reside. I have tried sucking them up with my syphon tube which I use for doing water changes, but I only get a few of them! I need something with stronger suction, is there anyone out there who can help me?

Snails are part and parcel of a fishtank I'm afraid! They tend to arrive with plants that you've introduced to the tank. Are you possibly overfeeding your fish? As this could be helping them to reproduce with alarming regularity.

There are products you can buy to help eradicate 'em, but personally I'm reluctant to introduce anything chemical to my tank, so I resort to doing it the old-fashioned way- scooping them out and throwing them outside.

In one of my tanks I have female fighter fish and they seem to eat them! I find snail shells littering the tank floor on many occasions, so the problem is solved in that tank at least. I wouldn't however introduce these type of fish to a normal community tank, they'll terrorise every other fish in there.

Thank you BOO for your comments about the snails! As it is I kill about a dozen a day, I just crush them and the fish have the remains before they reach the bottom of the tank. Like you I don't want to introduce chemicals so it looks as though I shall have to carry on dealing with them manually.
