Why are we supposed to feed a cold and starve a fever?

it used to mean that if you fed a cold, that would starve any possible fever. (ie if you ate while you had a cold, it wouldn't turn into a fever.) Now it seems to be understood as two separate treatments - eat if you've got a cold, don't if you've got a fever. I don't think the latter is good advice; eat to keep your strength up if you have either illness.
