Now it can't gen2 cos it follows a sort of sequence and the hen fits perfectly so I am a bit confused

We've been told by the compiler that the sequence is in number of letters in the answer and within that alphabetically, so that means that 'hen' doesn't fit for no. 41 in a row of 7-letter answers. It's the first of the alphabetic run with no. 43 starting with B so I reckon 41 is Chicken. Don't forget clue is for name of bird or bird in answer and Chicken covers all bases ie. both male and female birds and not just Hens (female). Hope this helps.
