Why do many muslims grow a big bushy beard but shave off their moustache?

There is a scholarly consensus from the saheeh ahaadeeth that it is an obligation (fard) to trim the moustache and let the beard grow. The important thing is that Muslims distinguish themselves from the mushrikeen (historically speaking) or as we know today, kafirs.

I've got a thing about beards, especially the Noel Edmonds type (PBUH). It's a vanity thing. It implies that you've stood in front of a mirror carefully shaving up to the edges, and the implied statement is 'wow how cool do I look with this beard' whereas 'you look like a right naff toss-pot or a terrorist' is nearer the mark.
