Hi,, how long can you keep red wine for and is there a guide for different reds or does the same rule apply to all, because they don't have a best before date?
Generally, the 'heavier' the wine, the longer it will keep, though this isn't always the case. Many reds are best drunk within two years, and some will even say this on the label.
On the other hand, there are bottles of reds available that pre-date WWII, that can cost several thousand pounds a bottle, and are perfectly drinkable.
The best advice is from wine reviews, and/or a seller who will know the keeping properties. Oddbins and Laithwaites are pretty good at this.
Whatever the wine - always store it horizontally at a cool, even temperature. Keeping the cork wet inside will ensure that it doesn't dry out and become porous - this will spoil the wine.
Most everyday wines should be drunk within 2-3 years of purchase.
