New House

I have recently bought a house which the previous owner did a lot of work too. It now appears the work was sub standard and not entirely safe. My solicitor advised the vendor to take out building indemnity insurance. Have I any recourse to have the work rectified?

I dont want to sound agist but he is 75 years old - how well can he plaster a ceiling? Aargh he's banging again now. He knocked the chimney breast out last year while we were on holiday. when we came home my ornaments had been bounced off the mantle.
