Do I have to wear a tie to a wedding?

Got a wedding Saturday - don't want to wear a tie though. I am wearing a nice charcoal suit with a pale pink shirt - I think it look sfine without a tie, but the missus reckons that etiquette dictates I wear one. It is a church wedding but knowing the groom well I know he won't be bothered either way. Just need to guage opinions really.

I agree with john. Every time i wear a suit i have to wear a tie.
Otherwise i look like a halfwit attempting to look smart.

My school started with the first year being the Second Form (the First Form being the last year of the prep school). Suits for Michaelmas and Lent terms, blazers and flannels for Trinity. Grey shirts until Fourth Form (3rd year) whereupon you could wear a white shirt. A tie at all times, socks of a sober hue. Boaters in summer term. And no girlies. Class.

Why not broaden your horizons and put in finishing school for boys in a search engine.

It wasn't really a school as such, in the same way metal shop at school wasn't really a shop.

Any decent school in the UK will have two or three weeks put aside for the finer things in life towards the end of its duration.

I think that sort of thing is only needed in boarding schools. If you are at home with your parents they will have taught you over many years to be polite, dress well and treat people/women properly.

No tie. They can actually look more scruffy than a nice open neck shirt and if you feel uncomfortable in a tie then what's the point - they are pretty stupid things anyway that serve no purpose. Blow convention - as long as you are clean and tidy it doesn't matter. Noone will be looking at you anyway.

It reminds me of some weddings where a formal top hat and tails have been decided on...now call me a snob if you will, but not everyone can carry it off.

The father of the groom was a well heeled individual who owned his suit and hat. The father of the bride hired his..and looked uncomfortable to say the least. My brother in law wore the same attire and looked a right knob.

John ~ I actually agree with school uniforms. They don't have to be shirts and ties, but I do think that it is better for kids to be wearing the same thing every day to school. If they all look the same certain money issues don't come into play so much. I remember starting 6th form at my school and we could wear what we wanted. Every day was a nightmare as I didn't have as many clothes as my peers :o( being a parent myself I appreciate the fact that the kids aren't going through all their clothes ever day deciding what to wear either!

like I said minter, I only heard of finishing school being for girls, I never heard of one for boys, however I may stand corrected

Pippa, I know where you are coming from in relation to school uniforms and having the same designer clothes as your peers, it's just that I personaly disagree with them, when the youngster starts school, he will wear a school uniform, school policy dictates that however, I would be happier if they had no such policy

Last wedding I went to I wore a nice suit and a lacoste polo shirt and looked smarter than most of the people there
