Dvd recording

I have recently bought a Panasonic dvd recorder but find when I record on plus or minus dvds my son cannot play either on his Panasonic dvd player.
Is there a compatability issue or am I doing something blond?

You have to finalise the DVD before you can play it on a another machine.

In my Panasonic, when I eject the DVD it asks if you want to finalize.

If I say yes it shows a progress bar for about 3 or 4 minutes and then says it has finsihed.

I can then play it on another DVD device.
