does anyone know if you can get a dvd recorder/player with twin freeview, internal hard drive, but with the ability to record and play back on ordinary discs as well.

I can recommend the Sony RDR HXD560 it has all you mentioned except for a dual Freeview tuner. Very straightforward to use. My other recommendation is a Humax 9200 pvr, it has a dual tuner but no dvd recorder.
