I am a new gardener and am having problems with all garden plants, the soil is alkaline with alot of clay, bulbs dont flower, bedding plants dont flower the only thing that had a few flowers was one clematis. Am I no good at gardening or is it the soil?

Bulbs often don't flower if they are not put in at the correct depth, I would try putting plenty of organic matter and grit in to break up the clay.Clay tends to bake hard in summer and be saturated in winter.Don't give up keep trying!

Don't dispair it's sounds like the soil!! I'd go along with what greenfingers has said, but add that the garden would also benifit from a good fertilizer. I use 'Growmore' spread liberally and then dig in. Also keep the ground watered in dry weather. If you're in the UK have a look at these sites and search 'clay soil'. (would be ok in the US to) www.angliangardener.co.uk www.rhs.org.uk www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/basics/ Also do a search for 'plants clay soil' as some plants do better then others in that type of soil. I've had some of this too with a heavy clay soil in a brand new garden. We added loads of manure in November and the a good dose of earthworms in March to help 'dig' it all in. www.wigglywigglers.co.uk
