I'm pretty sure the red suit originated with a Coca Cola advert, couldn't tell you the date, but if you google, i'm sure you'll find it.

According to Snopes, Coca Cola wasn't responsible for the red and white suit, they say Louis Prang (a Christmas Card printer) was.

Nice question. It comes from St. Nicholas. They made red suit to match his red nose. Hope this helps.

I agree with first answers.

His suit was origianally green as he was a simbol of the change of season and the coming of spring. Coca-cola changed it in their advertising and the rest is history!
