My cable Internet connection (Virgin Media) stopped working.
I solved the problem by switching off the cable modem for 2 minutes.
I would like to understand why this happens. Is there anything I can do to prevent it, or is this outside my control?

I don't know what causes the problem, but turning it off and back on after a few minutes resets the connection and refreshes the IP address.
There is nothing you can do to prevent it - just look at it as a mild irritation rather than a problem.
