Hello, I have just bought a Maxtor 3200 External hard drive. I am having great difficulty installing it, I am going to device manager, hardware update wizard. This is what happens: it looks like its about to install it then this message comes up:

Cannot install this hardware.
There was a problem installing this hardware.

I don't think it's the usb driver as such
usb ports rarely need (or get) updated

do you have any usb devices that do work?

go to device manager and remove all the USB entries ... then re-start ... windows will (maybe) "re-discover" the ports)

when you say you had it reformatted.
how - and by who?
if from a recovery disk - this sounds odd (worth trying again!)

if from scratch .... did whoever also re-install the MOBO drivers? - if not that's your problem
(d/l from your mfrs website)

finally - you say you still have the partition?????
whu? how - where??

Thanks for all your help, but I've taken it back to PC world for a refund. When I get a new PC hopefully I will be able to transfer the data across.
Thanks again.
