Your post gave me a horrible flashback to when I was in labour with my youngest child.(Now 19 months)I had had a very prolonged labour and by the end stage , I was completely exhausted and feeling quite distressed. I had been extremely unlucky with the two midwifes who were in attendance at the birth , as they obviously did not like each other and kept squabbling throughout my labour , arguing over tea breaks and generally being very nasty and unsupportive towards me , refusing me pain relief and being nippy towards me - which I felt was a contributing factor in my prolonged labour. Anyway , i'll never forget how I felt when I heard the shout 'Fetal Tachycardia'. A panic button was hit and the next thing I knew , doctors and midwifes were running about in a flap , the pin was pulled on my bed allowing it to drop completely flat and they threw my legs over my head shouting at me to push push push as my baby was in distress. I didn't have to be told twice ! They later told me that because I was exhausted and distressed my baby had gone into distress and her heartbeat had shot up to such an alarming rate which was very dangerous. This is often the cause of fetal tachycardia - prolonged labour , maternal distress , fever in labour etc. I couldn't stop crying because all I could think about was how I could have lost my baby and I later lodged a complaint against the two midwifes in question because of the way in which I was treated during labour. There's more to it but I won't bore you with all of that. Suffice to say , it was a very scary moment but she's now a very lively , giggly little girl , so all's well that ends well.
