Try a "restore" on your computer to an earlier time when you knew everything was ok. This will restore the settings from that time and might cure your possible non-existant virus?
Question Author
how do i do that without using the recovery disk as i dont want to wipe the whole thing

i "think" its ok now both norton and avg found threats and took them out.
Click on " start" then " search" " all files" and type in the word restore and click on search. It is usually the first in the list that appears as System Restore.

If you click on this it will open a window which allows you to click on a date when the computer last set a restore point.
Click on this date and ask it to restore. It will take a couple of minutes and restart your computer automatically with a note to say it has been restored to that date. If it doesn't work you can easily undo the operation.
Using System Restore wouldnt have helped. Malware infects your restore points too to ensure you remain infected.

What product was the malware telling you to use?

Luckily Im using Linux. Anyone with Windows, I dont advise clicking on that link.

Steve, I would suggest a proper clean up at this forum.

That's a fairly common infection, but unfortunately the usual tool doesnt have that in it's changelog, and the next tool is not one I would suggest you use without instruction from a pro.
Don't use Norton and AVG toghether or you will have all sorts of problems - delete one Norton would be my choice.

You have been hijacked you need

Adaware,Spybot search and destroy, & Hijack this- post your results from the latter in a forum which deals with this program or send a copy to me and I'll advise

PS keep using Firefox and ditch Internet Explorer if you don't want this happening again
