can someone please tell me when and how far back to prune a 4 foot hydrangea in a pot? thankyou in advance

Some advice here. Note that it's a bit late this year if you want blooms for next year, as next year's buds will have already started forming.
You can prune in spring and it will flower the same year. I do this to mine each year. I prune it just as the new shoots are forming then you can see how far to prune back.

Just remove last years old flower heads which act as some frost protection during the winter and prune back to a visible shoot. You can also thin out branches and re-shape as you go.
