BT should run line tests for about two weeks, before activating the broadband to your house.
If you have been able to get broadband then contact BT to see whether there is a problem at the exchange.
It used to be 4km, it is now 6km with BT.Bear in mind that the cables from the exchange to your house may not take a direct route and this figure refers to the cable distance.
Other issues may be the age and quality of the cabling. As has been suggested try your postcode or phone no. in the BT checker.
