period problem

i sometimes get spotting before my period starts, which can last a week or more when i do start bleeding that too can last anything upto 2 weeks. i did discuss it with my doctor who prescribed me tablets once, but i cant keep going back to the doctor everytime this happens. it is annoying and getting me really down. does anyone know why this happens? i have always had an irregular cylcle. sometimes i do'nt get my period for 5 months.

i would go on the pill if i were you. well i did, before i was on the pill i was on pretty much 3 weeks out of 4 every month, with the headaches and pains that come with it. and now im on the pill, you pretty much have total control. i think you should perhaps suggest this to your doctor.
