Scanning in printed pictures

I have been trying to scan some pictures from a magazine into my pc. When they are scanned in they seem to have a sort of pattern on them .( a little like interference ) If you look at them in a graphics package and magnify then the pattern disappears.

What causes this and is there a way to avoid it?

To remove this moir� pattern requires the use of a descreen filter...
