I have been doing well on my own recently but this puzzle has me stumped.

30ac It's no good, the net return in this (6) - e - - - -
18d The way of a poetic tenor? Odd! (9) n - i - - - e - -
22d Edomite(7) i - - - e - - (I wonder about Israeli as there is obviously a biblical connection.)
20d Tug-of-war competitor in the train (7) p - l - o - n ( If it wasn't for the 'o' it could be pullman but the 'o' comes from 27ac Poet's flower (7) which I think is aconite

They kept the noiseless tenor of their way . I suspect the Times was less cryptic 40 years ago which may explain 22 down .
