It was a solid drive, like a tank, with a feeling another tank was pushing you back. When we got it home my husband was fiddling around with it with my dad when, on pulling on the choke cable, he managed to cut his finger deeply. My dad drove him to the hospital while I eyed my new purchase with great suspicion.
My husband never took to the car, mainly because he always blamed it for having to have a tetanus shot in the bum.

I had a Ford Cortina Mk11, it was saluki bronze metalic, the paint used to flake off leaving good grey primer underneath. One point , I could have cold air from the facia vents and warm air on my feet, you have to have a very expensive car with two layer climate control to get that now.
My Lancia Beta Coupe had a bonnet release on both sides, oil level gauge as with as oil pressure and temperature. Believe it on not it had very little rust and was very reliable, had it for three years, got it for 360, 6 years old 23000 miles on the clock 2 owners. solt it for nearly what I payed for it.

A 1933 Hillman Minx, This car had a crash type gear box, in which one had to double - de - clutch to change gear, no synchronised gears in those days.
I passed my test in this car and I think the tester was so impressed that I did not crash any gears, that he passed me first time.
I traded this car in for a 1946 Austin 16, for only 10. This Austin was luxury Leather seats with arms (even the driver's seat)
Part opening windscreen, sunshine roof and valve radio with the long graphite aerial under the running board.
It also had 4 built in jacks at the end of each axle. One could select front, back or all four and then operate a handle under the bonnet to jack the car up. (don't know why they do not use this device on modern cars)
A chrome horn and spot lights on the front of the car completed the overall good looks to this metalic silver monster.
The only draw back was the fact that his car only did 10 miles to the gallon. But at only 4 gallons to the pound it did not matter.
