We were thinking of buying our daughter a tv/dvd combi ,however her computer monitor is a bit old too and a friend of mine suggested that an LCD monitor could be used to watch dvd's / play the playstation and computer. Is that right ?

I don't think this is possible, because there is no synch generator in a DVD player. I bought a cable from Maplin that was supposed to provide the sync.. but having tried it on a number of monitors, I've completely failed to get it to work.
As s10driver says, many LCD TVs have monitor inputs so you might consider that route.
I really would not recommend a TV/DVD combination of any description - think about the average life of a DVD player, and you will realise that it won't be long before you have a TV with a permanently attached piece of junk!
