If the state you wish to visit has 21 as the legal age to buy alcohol you obviously won't be able to get bar work. I worked in an ice cream parlour and a cinema. My friend worked breakfast in a diner (this was good because it left her afternoons free for the beach!).
You need to look into getting a visa and social security number. I went with an organisation which ran a student exchange programme and sorted out all our paper work etc. Not easy to get sorted independently. Need significant medical insurance as well. It cost $400 for my friend to be told she had a stomach upset and should take some milk of magnesia!!
Hope this helps. Good luck with your plans.

This site has a lot of information for you.
Two points; as Bloss states, some States have the minimum drinking age as 21 and some have lower... the lowest being 18. However, even within States that have lower drinking ages, Counties within that State may have established higher ages.
Additionally, unless your a bona fide student, you're likely going to find it difficult to obtain a visa for work. You can certainly obtain a tourist visa, but those don't allow work (except under extraordinary circumstances). That's not to say that you couldn't surrepticiously work, but you run the risk of discovery, which can have serious implications. Check the web site above carefully.
Best of luck and welcome to the U.S.!
