Can I dye silk?

Urm...thats my question!! I have some curtains which are great quality and were hand made for the woman we bought our house from. I love the style they're made in (which is the same throughout the house), but the colour means I'm tied to that theme in my bedroom. They're currently biscuity/beige with a dark brown taffeta type lining to the back, and I was thinking of dyeing (sp?) them black as my bedroom is now leaning to the dusky purple and grey shades.

They must have cost a bomb and to replace them in a similar quality and style would cost me hundreds...any ideas?
