Is it the male or the female or both which determines the sex of a baby. How does it work?

If I remember my GCSE Biology lessons correctly, it's the man who determines the sex, as women have xx chromosomes (both female) and men have xy (one male one female). So, while there is a 50/50 chance that it could be a boy or a girl, the man casts the deciding vote! If that's right then I have a good memory!

It is the male genetics that determines the sex of a baby, as sperm contains both the xy chromosome, whereas the female ovum contain only the y chromosome - luck of the draw, i guess!!!!!

It's right that the sperm decides whether the baby is a boy or a girl but the woman can only pass on the x (female) chromosome, whereas the man could either pass on the y chromosome (male) or another x.
