Christmas carol - religious

Christmas song - not (e.g. that "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" one)

I think that's the difference.

My distinction would be that a Christmas carol is a traditional holiday song that is commonly used as a sing-along (i.e. Joy to the World, Jingle Bells, etc).  A Christmas song would encompass a special holiday release by an artist - like "Thank God It's Christmas" by Queen or "Step into Christmas" by Elton John.
