unexpected debt
1 Answers
Please can somebody give me some advice. Over 4 years ago I got in to trouble with credit cards etc and behind on my council tax. I was chased by various debt collectors to repay outstanding amounts, these were all eventually cleared over 2 years ago or so I thought! I have just recieved a letter out of the blue from a company saying they have just bought a debt from Aqua master card which was from over 3 years ago for 95,. I did have a card from this company but as far as I am aware it was cleared like all the other debts. I moved from my old house over 3 years ago and all the other agencies had traced me to recover debts but I do not have any correspondence around to prove I am clear, how do I stand, please can somebody help?

I had a similar problem and got a free credit check from Experian. Turned out a gym I had belonged to still had me registered as a member although I had left and they claimed I had defaulted on the payments. They had passed my details to another credit company to recover the debt, but when I got in touch and insisted my membership had run out (from the year long agreement I originally signed) they dropped the claim. It left a minor default dint on my credit rating but it's not caused me any problems (been able to get credit cards and a mortgage since then).
If in doubt, get advice from Citizens Advice Bureau.
Good luck!
