In the US, tile type hardwood floors involve "tiles" that are about 6" to 10" squares.  If this is the type of floor you are describing, try this to start:  In a corner or other area that won't be obvious, obtain a paint thinner, mineral spirits or real shellac.  Dampen a cloth and, in a circular pattern, gently rub one of the tiles.  Depending on what they were finished with, this may loosen the top part of the finish allowing removal with another clean cloth.  It's work intensive, but will provide a nice clean finish once completed. If done properly, another finish is not needed.  Good luck with the project.
