My wife has been using a Dyson for the last 4 years and it still picks up as well as it has ever done. Ideal for wooden floors as it adjusts to the correct level. You don't need bags but you do need filters, but I think they last quite a long time. I have vacuumed the garage floor a couple of times and it survived!
