how do you remove the window winder handle on a vw van 2002?

I don't specifically know for a VW van, but some manufacturers have a metal spring clip that holds the handle onto the shaft. This is usually between the back of the centre part of the winder handle and the door trim. You may be able to shine a torch down between to two parts and see it. A piece of thick string or some wire can usually be pulled between the trim and the centre of the handle to remove it, once you see which way the opening of the clip faces. It's a bit similar to a circlip.

Otherwise the centre of the winder handle may have a press in trim which once removed will expose a screw in the centre of the handle that holds it to the shaft.

just take it down to a windscreen replacement centre , they will do it for you , there are various methods used, one is the spring clip which you pull out , another is the facia unclips off the winder and reveals a screw, another pulls straight off, another is the surround on the winder, ie the rounded piece that buts up to the door slides forward and it releases off from there ( i think thats the one you have ??), like I say if you are unsure just pop into a windscreen place they won't charge you I am sure ...
