What do butterflies eat?

I might be mistaken but I think they eat nectar from flowers.

nectar is the common food but some buterflies need salt and other minerals so they can sometimes be sen feeding by water or on someones smelly shoes or even on your arm...some moths which are really a different type of butterfly the french call them butterflies of the night do not feed at all and when the adult hatches its only purpose is to find a mate bit like some humans on a saturday night
