Wheels Size Tyre Roar

Hi, I have a car running 18" wheels on 255/40/zr18 tyres but there is alot of tyre roar and harsh ride. I am thinking of changing down to a 17" wheel. Will this make any difference and is there anything I need to be aware of if I do. Thanks

the ride will be harsh on 40 profile tyres and the width;and tread pattern will cause roar , some cars are worse than oters for tyre noise
