What abilities does the newborn baby have to enable him to breast feeding immediately?

Rooting reflex - if you gently touch your baby on the side of his mouth, he'll turn towards the source.

Sucking reflex - your baby will suck anything that's placed in his mouth.

I agree with previous answer but my son was very sleepy after he was born and didn't have much interest for about a day.

The reflex to suckle isn't always there,my son was born without it and had to be taught over a two week period to suck properly with the use of nipple shields. He subsequently was breast fed until the age of 2.
