Hi. I have recently had Gastric Band Surgery and have lost ten stones. Does anyone know anyone else who has had it and been through hell with it and who might be able to put me in touch with a website to chat about the same.

Thanks.
Katie Lancashire.

Sorry Donna, dont know but couldn't your hospital or GP give you the relevant information for a website (if it exists). I had a quick look on google and there was nothing obvious.

You could try posting this in Body and Soul under health and fitness as it might be more appropriate there.

Congratulations on your weight loss and I hope you find what you are looking for. Failing that you could always start up your own website.

Good luck.
Oops, sorry Katie (not Donna!)
Hi Katie

Unfortunately, not had the surgery myself but I would be interested to know what you mean by 'going through hell with it' as it is something that could happen to me in the future.

Dear Kaz Tuz.

What I mean by hell is HELL ON EARTH and if I had the choice I would NEVER do it again. I am giving a BBC Radio Lancashire Interview on it on Friday (Ladies at Lunch - between 11 and 1pm). I paid 10,000 for my operation and am NOT IN ANY WAY critisising my GP or my Surgeon as they did what I asked them to do! The First operation I had went wrong and the band slipped. Thus I had to undergo the operation AGAIN, leaving me with 14 scars across my stomach as opposed to 7. It was HELL. They pump your stomach full of gas which is PAINFUL and I was hooked up to morphine for two days. It took 6 weeks for the gas to get out of my system and each day I cried with the pain.. It is true to say that WE ARE WHAT WE EAT! I am a grazer and graze all day. I initally put on 7 stones due to a back injury and had there been any other way I could have got the weight off fast I would have done it. Continued.......

Kaztuz, continued.....

The band is like a double elastic band if you will and it is stitched around your stomach and then filled with saline. My band holds 11 mils of which I have 8 in at the moment. My body cannot tolerate fish, chicken, meat, bread. pasta or anything like that. Everything has to be liquidised. I was never a chocolate lover but that is all I can seem to be able to eat at times. Its a FORCED ANOREXIA and I vomit up to 30 times a day, live with constant headaches due to de-hydration and have had more time off work than you can possibly wish to imagine. 3 weeks ago, due to the fact that I have been vomiting 30 times a day, the lining of my stomach ripped and I vomited half pints of blood. I was thus rushed to hospital and underwent 3 blood transfusions in a week. The surgeons performing GB Ops dont make you aware of this. Granted I have lost 10 stones. Is the operation reversible? Physically Yes, Psychologically No! Because as Sharon Osborne quotes it is more acceptable in this society to be a Junkie than it is to be a fat person. And physically, who would ever want to reverse back to a size 28 - 30 from a 10 - 12.

Hope this helps.

Katie. xx

I'm amazed your post op care team haven't signposted you to here. Get in touch with them and I'm sure they will be able to help you.
I really want a gastric band, but can't afford it at the moment, after reading your horrific experience I'm a little more concerned than before, but would still do it. I'm really sorry to hear about your hard times, and I hope you come through this and are able to fully enjoy your life :)

Dear Northguard.

Thank you so much for your good wishes. I have looked at the website you offered and it seems helpful. I wonder if anyone knows of a chat site though. I am glad not to have suffered alone but am sorry for those that have. Thank you so much again.

Katie.
