I just recieved an email from myself. In the side pane where it lists the sender of the email it said my entire email address. It was in my junk mail and I opened it but there was just a link there and it was obviously spam but how can this happen?
one way is the use of "bots" ... some use spoofing ...
others may indicate you are the culprit
bots are viruses which live inside a network and send e-mails .... because they are inside your domain the server believes they are legitimate ... and sends them ...
spoofing just replaces the header info ... so it just looks as if it's from you
and you as the culprit ... if you are infected ... it's actually your e-mail that's being used ... (generally using your addressbook (look for your router working when you aren't)
bots zombies ... there are lots of different types of openings
I could send an email that looked as though it was from you. Or from Bill Gates.
It's a problem with the email system itself.
If you own and use a domain name for email, you can add a SPF entry in the TXT field, in your domain settings. This will allow only your own SMTP server to send emails from your address, and hopefully others' should be refused.
thanks AC and fo3nix. I will just ignore them if I get anymore. But could this mean I have a virus?
psst fo3nix, can you send me an email from Vin Diesel asking me to marry him? Im quite an optimistic person and Im sure it would stand up in a court of law ;)
