I want my kids (aged 27 & 21) to contribute towards the household costs - what is reasonable for someone earning 250-300 per week? They have had the opportunity to work it off with chores which they neglect so the heavy hand is coming out. Do you even agree with charging them?

I used to pay a quarter of my wage in board weekly, and that was less than some of my friends. I also did my own laundry and helped around the house.
It prepared me slightly for when I left home because my rent was only about 3 quid a week more than what i paid in board
200 - 300 per month keep...Leaves 800 plus monthly spending money...Not bad eh?
A third of their take-home pay sounds fair. one third for you, one third to save - and the remaining third for them to spend on themselves.
If you want to give them a shake, I left home at 15 and have been paying my own way ever since. I bought my own house at 21 (mortgaged) and regret nothing. Maybe sit them down and work out a budget. See what they 'need' per month, set an amount for savings (house, cars etc) and you can fairly ask for a set amount.
Hope this makes sense!
Trying to suggest a way so they know that you are being fair and have put their needs first
They don't know how lucky they are!
You're definately NOT a Bad Dad!
