cavity wall insulation

Hi answerbankers.
Those of you who have had cavity wall insulation, what do you think of it, does it stop any draughs. We are having it done at the end of the month. Also does any one think it may have some sound insulation if we ask them to put it in the walls between our neighbours,( they are very noisy).

The purpose of cavity insulation is not to stop draughts, which generally occur between ill-fitting window and doorframes. However since it will fill the cavity and given that some air movement does occur in there, particularly when the wind outside is greater, it will have some impact.
The main purpose of the insulation is to act as a thermal barrier to transmission of conducted and convected heat from your warmer inside to the outside walls, where it is lost.
Don't know about the sound insulation question.

We have found it keeps our home beautifully warm,people even remark on it.
As buildersmate says; it's purpose is not for stopping draughts so you do still tend to get an occasional draught.
No, it does not stop noise from neighbours; we have a very loud spoken neighbour and can hear him speaking on the telephone at times.
We vote cavity wall insulation as well worth the money and I guess it must be saving us some.

We have had cavity wall insulation for many years and it has been very effective in helping to retain heat in our house and reduce fuel bills. When we compared fuel bills with our next door neighbour who lives in an identical house with the same habits, our bill was much less than his. Cavity wall insulation won't stop draughts. For that you will need doors and windows which fit firmly and securely. If you are planning to stay in your house long enough, it will prove a valuable investment, especially in these days or rising energy prices.

it is why when you go out in the cold you have a t-shirt- jumper and coat.... im agine going out with just a t-shirt and a coat....

Only external walls nornally have cavities, so unless your noisy neighbours are in a detached house then it can't be done.

As Panic Button says, between you and your neighbours is your plasterboard, and the gap between the plasterboard and the Breeze block which separates the two of you. It is not a 'Cavity', which is the gap between your outside brickwork and your inner breeze blocks.

We had it done a few months back and the difference is very noticeable.
